What started as a grassroots effort has grown into a fully operational nonprofit serving Portland's most vulnerable residents through Workforce Development, Housing Navigation & Homemaking, and Supportive Sheltering — including the Menlo Park Safe Rest Village, a community of 75 tiny homes providing 24/7, year-round support.
Challenges
As Cultivate grew, their technology struggled to keep pace. Their security setup relied on consumer-grade residential cameras — not built for a complex, always-on environment like the Menlo Park Safe Rest Village. Footage was difficult to review, incident documentation was time-consuming, and staff had limited tools to respond quickly when situations arose.

Verkada Access Control added automated gate monitoring and entry management, eliminating the need for a staff member stationed at the entrance around the clock.
To support fleet operations, LTT Partners deployed Samsara — giving Cultivate real-time visibility into vehicle activity and streamlining fleet management. For communications, RingCentral replaced Google Voice with a professional platform built for team coordination, faster incident response, and reliable day-to-day operations.

The residents of the Menlo Park Safe Rest Village are rebuilding their lives — and feeling safe is central to that journey. The Verkada system has made that safety tangible, used daily for accountability, deterrence, and incident documentation. When the system briefly went offline due to a third-party internet outage, residents expressed genuine reluctance to leave their pods — making clear just how much the infrastructure means to the people Cultivate serves.
With intuitive tools that reduce time spent on investigations and communications management, staff stay focused on the mission rather than fighting technology. That value showed up in an unexpected way when Pearl, Cultivate's house dog, was stolen — staff used the camera system to track the individual across multiple angles and trace a path to nearby businesses, and Pearl was found and returned safely.
