AT&T's Copper Line Shutdown: What Businesses Should Know

The telecommunications industry is continuing to shift away from legacy infrastructure, and it’s becoming more relevant for businesses planning ahead.

AT&T recently filed with the FCC to begin discontinuing certain copper-based voice services starting November 15, 2026. This shift will impact over 1,000 wire centers across parts of 18 states and is part of a broader, multi-year transition toward fully retiring copper lines by 2029.

For many organizations, this change won’t come as a surprise. The move away from traditional POTS lines has been underway for years as newer, more flexible technologies have become more widely available.

Where Copper Lines Are Still in Use

Even as systems have begun to modernize, copper lines are still commonly found supporting:

  • Fire alarm panels

  • Elevator phones

  • Building entry systems

  • Fax machines

  • Emergency and safety lines

These systems tend to operate in the background of daily operations, which is why they are often missed during broader IT or telecom reviews. However, they remain essential to safety, compliance, and continuity. They are often designed to rely on analog lines for reliability and simplicity, which is why many have remained unchanged even as other parts of the business have modernized.

What's Changing

As providers continue to phase out copper lines, businesses may begin to notice gradual shifts rather than sudden disruptions. These changes include:

  • Increased costs for maintaining legacy lines as carriers continue to decommission infrastructure

  • Fewer service and support options available for older technologies over time

  • More conversations around compliance requirements, particularly for systems tied to safety and regulatory standards.

In many cases, organizations are seeing these changes show up first in billing increases or reduced support options for maintaining existing lines.

While these changes don’t happen all at once, they do indicate a clear direction, making it a good time for organizations to understand their current exposure.

A Good Time to Reassess

Rather than viewing this as a disruption, this is a good opportunity to re-evaluate your organization's systems and plan ahead.

For many organizations, this starts with identifying where legacy lines exist, what systems depend on them, and how critical those systems are to daily operations.

Transitioning away from copper can offer benefits like:

  • Streamlined communications infrastructure

  • Greater flexibility across locations

  • Improved visibility into systems that may not have been actively monitored

  • Opportunities to align with current technology standards

POTS Replacement Solutions to Consider

There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to replacing copper lines. Different environments, compliance requirements, and operational needs call for different solutions.

We take a consultative, vendor-neutral approach to help organizations select and implement the right solutions based on their specific needs.

Ooma AirDial

Ooma AirDial is an all-in-one POTS replacement solution that combines hardware, connectivity, and centralized management. It's designed to support existing analog devices without requiring a full infrastructure overhaul.

This makes it a strong fit for organizations looking for a simple, scalable solution with visibility across multiple locations. It supports systems like fire alarms, elevator phones, and entry way systems while allowing teams to monitor and manage everything through a centralized platform.

Where LTT Partners helps: We help identify where AirDial is the best fit, coordinate deployment across sites, and ensure systems are configured properly for reliability and ongoing visibility for your team.

Granite EPIK

Granite EPIK is designed for environments with strict compliance and security environments. It provides a managed, secure alternative to traditional copper lines with built-in redundancy and monitoring.

This solution is often used in industries where regulatory standards are critical, supporting systems like fire panels, security systems, and emergency communication lines.

Where LTT Partners helps: We work with your team to understand compliance requirements, design the right solution, and manage implementation to ensure everything is aligned with regulatory expectations.

DataRemote

DataRemote offers flexible, enterprise-grade POTS replacement solutions that leverage cellular and IP-based connectivity. It's well suited for organizations with distributed locations or more complex environments.

These solutions are designed to integrate with existing systems while providing reliable connectivity and centralized visibility.

Where LTT Partners helps: We evaluate where DataRemote fits within your environment, align it with you existing infrastructure, and oversee deployment to ensure a smooth transition.

Questions Worth Exploring

If you haven’t looked at your legacy lines recently, it may be helpful to ask:

  • Where are we still using POTS lines today?

  • Have there been any recent changes in billing or service levels?

  • Are all of our systems aligned with current compliance requirements?

  • What would a gradual transition plan look like for our organization?

How LTT Partners Can Support This Transition

We take a structured, consultative approach to POTS replacement, helping organizations move away from copper lines in way that is intentional, low-disruption, and aligned with broader, operational goals.

Our process typically starts with discovery and assessment. We work with you team to identify where POTS lines exist across your environment, what systems depend on them, and how those systems are being used today. In many cases, this includes uncovering lines that may not be well documented or are spread across multiple locations or departments.

From there, we move into analysis and prioritization. Not all lines carry the same level of importance, so we help categorize systems based on criticality, compliance requirements, and risk. This allows us to build a transition plan that focuses first on the system that matter most, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Once there is a clear understanding of the environment, we guide you though solution selection. Because we work with multiple providers, including Ooma AirDial, Granite EPIK, and DataRemote, we're able to recommend the best-fit solution based on your specific needs. In many cases, organizations may benefit from a combination of solutions depending on location, use case, or regulatory requirements.

After selecting the right approach, we support implementation and coordination. This includes working alongside your internal teams and vendors to ensure devices are properly configured, connectivity is validated, and systems are tested before going live. Our goal is to minimize disruption while ensuring everything functions as expected from day one.

As organizations transition away from copper, having clear insight into these systems becomes increasingly important. We help ensure you have the tools and processes in place to monitor performance, manage changes, and adapt as your environment evolves.

Looking Ahead

Throughout the entire transition process, our role is to provide clarity, reduce complexity, and act as a partner in making the switch over manageable. Whether you're just beginning to asses your environment or are ready to move forward with implementation, we help ensure every step is aligned with your organizations needs.
